Sharing life stories, memories and "lessons learned" can feel a bit daunting at first. We have pulled together some frequently asked questions to help explain a bit about the Soundportrait process and what you can expect when we come to call.

How do I begin to talk about my life?

Our questionnaire will help you get started. It provides us with some basic facts and it helps you think about the stories of your life. We will review it, talk to you, and then plan what we can cover in the recording session.

How much does this cost?

Our standard Soundsketch begins at $1,500, a Soundportrait begins at $2,500 and each Soundtribute is given an individual estimate once we hear what your needs are. Each Soundportrait requires substantial research, careful interviewing, sensitive editing and professional production.

How do you make a Soundportrait?

We come to your home or office, wherever you are comfortable, to record our conversation using clip-on microphones and small but powerful digital recorders. We edit and complete the rest of the design in our offices.

What if I can't think of anything to say?

Part of our job is to help you feel comfortable and to help you organize your thoughts and stories in a way that will be engaging and easy to listen to. The interview is recorded, and so we are able to edit out any pauses, false starts, or interruptions. We will help you tell your stories in an intelligent, entertaining way.

What kind of questions do you ask?

Our questions will help you remember what matters most to you. We might ask you to recall some memories of your first home, stories from your youth, times with your children or friends or colleagues. Our clients all enjoy this journey, and so do we!

How long does it take?

Our standard questionnaire takes about an hour to fill in. The recording session - when we sit down and hear your stories - takes about 45 minutes for a Soundsketch and 90 minutes for a Soundportrait. A Soundtribute involves much more time.

When will I hear the finished product?

After editing, mixing, design work and a rigorous post-production review, we will deliver your Soundportrait in 6–12 weeks.

Can I get extra copies of my Soundportrait?

Yes! You automatically receive two copies if you order a Soundsketch or a Soundportrait. And extra copies are easy to order for all of our offerings, including the Soundtribute. We also have elegant Soundportrait USB keys that we load with your interview and the CD booklet (or the Soundtribute album).

Will you share my stories with anyone?

Absolutely not – not without your permission. Confidentiality is integral to our business.

Could I speak with someone who has been interviewed?

Certainly! We are happy to put you in touch with someone who has gone through the process.

Do you travel outside Toronto to record?

We have recorded Soundportraits in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and overseas. Please don't hesitate to contact us. If you can get us there, we will come!

Where can I reach you?

Please call us or contact us by e-mail. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
